098 – Software to Run Your Website Development Business
In today’s episode, I follow the eight other people that I interviewed in the past fews and share what tools I use daily to run my company. Quite simply, this is about software to run your website development business
Computer OS: Mac
HTML, CSS, PHP Editor: Espresso, Coda 2
FTP Clients: Flow, Forklift
Photo Editor: Acorn, Adobe Creative Cloud
Web Browser: Chrome / Safari, Web Developer,
Productivity Tools: WorkFlowy Things
Podcasting Tools: Adobe Audition ID3 Tag Editor, Libsyn Soundboard
Misc. Tools: Freshbooks, ScreenFlow
What do you use? Is it something that hasn’t been mentioned? Let us know in the comments below.
Dustin,
Oct 17, 2012Vector stuff – check out OmniGraffle. Panic makes Transmit – a pretty highly rated ftp client. You can import site info into Coda.
Latest – greatest editor project is probably Sublime Text 2.
The folks that make TextWrangler also make BBEdit – which does ftp/sftp.
Productivity – OmniFocus – Mac/ipad/iphone. Also check out FlyingMeat’s Voodoopad. You can make a checkbox list, and there is a macro to cross out completed items and move them to the bottom of the list. Also <at>todo tags.
DevonAgent browser and DevonThink Pro database are a pretty powerful combination. DevonAgent has page filters and a great built-in search function. DVTPO takes pdfs and ocr’s them. You can convert between html rtfd and rtf in one click.
They used to say there wasn’t any software for the Mac – remember those days?

@DustinHartzler You should add a blooper reel to the end of your shows every once in a while, as a bonus.
Oct 17, 2012Great show Dustin, as always.
Oct 18, 2012I use both Mac and PC, so I have bought tools for both operating systems:1. Version Control: I am using Mercurial (mercurial.selenic.com) since it’s pretty easy to work on. It’s similar to GitHub. I use it in conjunction with BitBucket (online service for storing your buckets).
2. Color Selection: I recently discovered ColorScheme Studio. It allows you to pick colors using several rules: monochromatic, complementary, triads, etc. In addition, you can create color palettes from pictures and connect to their website for additional color schemes.
Right now it’s on sale at the App Store ($19.99 instead of $49.99)
3. Diagram Drawing: I am a university professor, so I have to make a lot of block diagrams, flow charts, etc. for my lectures and the material I leave on my website. There is a small program that is great for that purpose, called Simple Diagrams (runs on Windows and Mac OS X). If you need to create diagrams for your website, this is a great solution.
4. Wireframing. There is a new app that use to be a Firefox Addon but that now has its own stand-alone version. It’s called Evolus Pencil. It has a lot of pre-made drawings and it’s a great alternative to Balsamiq Mockups.
Greetings from Chile,
Patricio
@pparada Thanks Patricio! ColorScheme Studio looks great! So does the wireframing tool. If people are interested, check out: http://pencil.evolus.vn/ for more details!
Oct 19, 2012I enjoyed the episode although I do get more from the discussion of tools with those of your guests who were a little bit further along more than those who were just starting.
Oct 20, 2012@Chris Christensen Thanks for the feedback Chris!
Oct 20, 2012Thanks for this. Some of these software I’ve never heard of, I will try it for sure! I wonder why Adobe Photoshop isn’t in the list?
Oct 22, 2012@demi ter haar I do use photoshop / illustrator, but they are both included with Adobe Creative Cloud 🙂
Oct 22, 2012@dhartzler10 @demi ter haar Which of these is the best to use? I’m just starting to design my own websites.I don’t have a lot of experience.
Oct 23, 2012@wesley koelewijn @demi ter haar I don’t know if I can label a “best.” Most of the software have free trials, download them and find the one that fits your needs the best.
Oct 23, 2012This show was to help people learn what is out there, so they can check it out themselves 🙂
This is wonderful!
