092 – Version Control your WordPress site

In today’s show, I interview my friend Aaron Holbrook (@AaronJHolbrook) from a7web.com and aaronjholbrook.com so we can learn about version control.

This is a topic that I need a lesson on, so I’m excited to bring you this interview. I hope you learn as much as I did.

Here are some of the questions that we covered:
– What is version control?
– Who should be using version control?
– Do I have to use something like GitHub?
– What are the major benefits?
– Doesn’t it take longer / take up more room for more files?
– How do I use Git Hub
– Does it cost money for Git Hub?

Great into to GIT.  I’m curious to know, if Aaron is watching here, does he use GIT for non programming files, like photoshop files?   I currently use a self imposed versioning theme, adding dates to file names.  I’m wondering if this is a better approach.

@stephencross  Hey Stephen, thanks for listening and I’m glad you found it useful!

Yes – you can certainly use Git or any other version control system for photoshop files or images. Keep in mind however that large photoshop files will bulk up the size of your repository and could lead to issues if you get too large (>4gb).

If I had more photoshop work where I needed to experiment or keep versions of my project I would definitely throw it into Git.

        Good luck!

@AaronJHolbrook a 4gb limit will not work for my design files.    Thanks.

@stephencross  @AaronJHolbrook Stephen, how do you manage your different .PSD files?

I know I normally save the first one, make changes and call it .rev1, then .rev2 and so on.

Thanks for this podcast.  I have been hearing more and more about GIT so it was nice to have a few things clarified.  I’m not using it yet but nice to have the info in this GIT intro in my back pocket for the future.
