009 – Switch From WordPress.com to WordPress.org

Ok so you have been listening now for awhile and you realize that you need to transfer your website from WordPress.com to WordPress.org because of all of the great value it gives you.

1.) Set up hosting with YourWebsiteEngineer.com/hosting
2.) Click on the order now button.
3.) You have two choices, enter your new domain name or existing domain name.
4.) Provide the information that greengeeks needs to register your account
5.) You will receive a confirmation email with the login credentials
6.) With the login credentials go back to greengeeks.com and upper right hand corner is client login.
7.) Use the cpanel login side and log in
8.) You now see the cpanel, scroll down to the Software/Services area and click on Softaculous
9.) On the left you will see blogs, click the down arrow
10.) Then click WordPress
11.) On the tabs across the top, you will see install.
12.) Fill in the boxes here, make a username and password
13.) Click install
14.) The next page will give you information to log into your WordPress site. Go ahead and log on.

That is the hardest part of the process, setting up your new domain and hosting.

15.) Now, let’s go to your WordPress.com site, dashboard area.
16.) Click the down arrow next to Tools, then select Export
17.) Then click Download Export File. Leave the default settings
18.) Go back to WordPress.org site.
19.) Click on down arrow next to tools and select import
20.) Choose to import from WordPress
21.) This should prompt you to add a plugin. Allow WordPress to install plugin.
22.) Then select the file we just exported
23.) Then import to your username (author) and check the “Download and import file attachments” checkbox.

      Dustin, I finally got around to switching from wordpress.com to wordpress.org and this episode helped me out a ton! Thanks for sharing this, your directions were easily to follow and I had no problems whatsoever!
