Keep Your Site Secure When Hiring a WordPress Developer

This week Colin wrote in with a question: How can I keep my website secure when I hire a contractor to do the work for me?

  • Set up a duplicate site and give your developer access to this site
  • Allow them to make the necessary changes
  • Push their changes back to the live site with WP Migrate DB Pro or similar plugin
  • Give them a few more projects in the same way
  • Once you feel comfortable with your new developer, then you can give them access to your live site
  • Only give them access to exactly what they need
  • Generate a new password for each project and revoke access when project is completed
  • Make sure you have offsite backups that they don’t have access to
