Spring Clean Your WordPress Site
Check Your Sales – take some time to look at your site and see what’s selling and what’s not. If a product isn’t selling, remove from site, or add it to a bundle.
Check Page Views – which pages on your site are getting the most page views? Do you have specific calls to actions on those pages?
Look at Your Product Links – add a product to your cart and work through the process of purchasing. Is the process intuitive? How can you make the checkout process more seamless?
Check The Speed of Your Site – us a website speed test like Pingdom or GTMetrix to see how fast your site is loading. Also try using P3 Profiler to see which plugins are taking up the most resources.
Look at Security – are you using Better WP Security to lock down your website? Have you changed your password recently? Are you limiting the number of incorrect login attempts before someone is locked out of your site?
Are you compatible with new devices – new devices are always coming to the market. Do your sites look good on them? You don’t have to own each of these devices; simply go to a store where they are sold and check out your site.
Is Your Content Fresh? – when was the last time that added new content to your website? If it’s been awhile, then write a new blog post or revamp your About page.
Do you have a compelling offer? – how can visitors to your site take action? Are you asking for their email address to give them something? Is that offer still good? Do you have an outdated coupon code on your site?
Does your site need a refresh? – when was the last time you did visual changes to your site? Now might be a good time to make either a few small revisions or a complete overhaul may be necessary.
How’s the navigation through your site? – is it easy to navigate your site? Is it easy for visitors to move from one post to the next?
Social media links? – have you included all the social networks that you participate on? Does the floating widget your using cover some of your text on your site on a mobile device?
Are running latest version of WordPress? – this one should be easy 🙂 Make sure you are using the newest version of WordPress.
Do you have old themes / plugins hanging around? – if your not currently using a theme or plugin, get rid of it. You can always download it again later.
Clean Up Your Database – this is probably the trickiest thing on the list. Have you removed old revision posts lately? What about settings / tables from plugins you no longer use?
Newsletter Autoresponders – add your email address to a signup box on your site. Take a look at all the messages that people will see. Does any of the language need reworked? Can you make it simpler? Do you need to add more messages to your autoresponder?
Call To Action
What do you need to clean up on your website?

Great tips! You can use the http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/wp-dbmanager/ to remove unnecessary tables from WordPress databases. I wrote a post about it: http://optimwise.com/clean-up-a-wordpress-database-with-the-wp-dbmanager-plugin/
Feb 20, 2014GREAT SHOW !!
Thanks Dustin. Loads of great ideas.
FYI – regarding old themes. I found out the hard way that olde themes can still be a security vulnerability even if they are inactive. (Damn you Themify). So keep old themes and plugins up to date, or delete completely.
Wish we were getting the full show notes via podcast.
Also, the Music Intro / Vox mix was way too loud – could hardly hear you over the music at the beginning and end of the show.
Feb 23, 2014MichaelQ Thanks Michael!
Yep, this week I goofed on the audio levels 🙁
I expect all of these items to be addressed on all your sites by the next show 🙂 hehe
Feb 23, 2014P3 Profiler gets really baaad reviews these days: it hasn’ been updated in 2 years…
May 10, 2017This is an episode that was published over three years ago, so it was an active plugin at the time.
