To be a typical web designer/developer to work with clients on a small scale for 3 – 10 page websites, what programming languages necessary t learn at once? Do you understand these languages? Any advice as to what I can do?

I’m starting a new business and need to develop a website. There seems to be a huge variance in the cost ($200- $5000.). When I put out the job on Scriplance, I received a number of bids but it’s impossible to tell if they are really competent. I want someone I can talk to directly (telephone) especially in the beginning. Cost is an issue as you would expect with new business. Do you have any suggestions on how to get quality work at a fair price?
How to hire a WordPress developer (who’s a professional)
- Ask for links to see past work
- See if the site was build from a theme
- If so, ask to see the original theme (then compare the differences)
- See if this is their full-time job (you will get much better work from a full-time web guy)
- Ask how to contact them (can you call, Skype, email)
- Ask if they will be doing the work or if someone else will be writing the code
- Ask for an itemized estimate
- Get a contract in writing
- Who owns the content?
- Learn some WordPress jargon and ask them questions so see if they understand
How to Save Costs
- Start with a theme
- Use free plugins that will get the job done
- Negotiate a set price (some web developers will charge you hourly then milk the clock).
- Add content yourself, such as posts and pages
I’ve been building a membership site with s2Member, and I’ve been quite impressed with how good it is. The free plugin did almost everything the client needed, but I ended up upgrading to the pro version because the client wanted members to be able to sign up for free and convert to a paid membership later.
