Question from Amy

How should I resize my images for the web? My client has given me images that are 4000x3000px and I want to make sure that I am covered in the future if I need larger images.

How and Where to Find Images for Your WordPress Site

  • Image Rights
    • Need a quick picture for a blog post, web page or anything else? If you’re like most people, you jump into Google Images and grab a great shot from there.
    • Unfortunately, that puts you at huge risk of lawsuit, because, unless someone specifically grants rights to you to use a given image, every picture taken in the United States (and in most other countries) is considered to be copyrighted, and the property of the person who took that picture.
  • So where can get images?
    • Negotiate payment for rights with the photographer
    • Go to sites that sell rights for pictures and pay for images you use (like stock photography sites)
    • Use creative commons-licensed content and follow their guidelines.
    • Hire a photographer to take every picture for your website or blog
    • Snap the pictures yourself
  • Free
  • Premium
    • iStockPhoto.com
    • 500px.com
    • shutterstock.com

Interesting topic! Actually, I myself am an iStockphoto contributor. 🙂 One tip to spend less on iStock is to buy images from non exclusive contributor cos images from exclusive contributors are way more expensive (those photos with a yellow crown icon are from exclusive contributors).

FYI, an exclusive iStockphoto contributor is someone who has more than 250 downloads with a minimum 50% approval rating. Of course, qualified contributors can choose not to turn exclusive so that they can sell images on other stock library like shutterstock.com, though. Anyway, I’m still far away from meeting the requirement, haha.

Thank you always for the resourceful podcast! Can’t wait for the next Wednesday!

Thanks, Dustin and Adam! I usually need to educate my clients that Google Images isn’t a free-for-all. I’ve use Flickr Creative Commons (http://www.flickr.com/search/advanced/), which is one source you mentioned. I’ve also had some luck getting free images from Wikimedia Commons (http://commons.wikimedia.org), and buying images from Dreamstime.com (http://www.dreamstime.com/).There are a couple Windows programs that I use for resizing, changing formats, and other optimization. Paint.NET (http://www.getpaint.net/) works well for single images, and it also has some nice editing features. The Radical Image Optimization Tool, or RIOT for short (http://luci.criosweb.ro/riot/), allows bulk resizing, so you can do several images at once.

Thanks for the tips! Here’s an addition: I’ve used photoxpress.com. They have both free and premium pictures available.

Great episode Dustin. I use http://www.photopin.com to find my pictures. It’s basically a flickr search engine.

You mentioned it in Ep 121, but I would not recommend iStock.  They do not treat artists fairly and they pay the lowest rates to artists in the industry.  I would add Pond5.com to your list and if it’s low-cost (like iStock) that you want, Shutterstock.com is much more fair to their artists and compete on low price with iStock.

Also, Dreamstime.com which is on your list has a VERY extensive collection of free images available.

@dnavarrojr I had no idea that artists aren’t treated fairly at iStockPhoto, good to know. I’ll definitely be supporting other places.

@dnavarrojr One of my clients had a http://pond5.com account and he loved it. He bought some pretty good stock photos there.

      sxc.hu is now freeimages.com.
I think you should also include Pixabay.com as a source for copyright-free photos and cliparts.
