6 Reasons You Should Learn How to Code
It’s useful even outside of computer geek circles
– You can save time and money by creating a simple program when you combine the knowledge of business with the knowledge of programming
It helps you talk to programmers
– Some knowledge of code may not make you a coder, but you’ll be able to easily communicate with someone who will be creating the program / application
It’s fun hobby
– Coding is addictive.
– There are struggles that you will face, but it is so worth it
– Time flys by
Computers are everywhere.
It teaches us other skills
– Science has shown that kids who learn piano makes them better at math, much the same with coding
– It helps problem solving / critical thinking
– Helps you notice things you might not have noticed before
Programmers are in high demand
– average starting salary for a good programmer is $100k
– no manual labor

Dustin, the link to Using WordPress / Tris Hussey is broken. Looks like there’s an extra character in front of the “http”.
Feb 27, 2013@Chad Warner Thanks Chad! I’ve corrected it 🙂
Feb 27, 2013I’ve read quite a few WordPress books (full list: http://www.goodreads.com/review/list/1586355-chad-warner?format=html&order=d&search), and here are my favorites (links point to my reviews):
Feb 27, 2013WordPress for Dummies (http://optimwise.com/book-review-wordpress-for-dummies-by-lisa-sabin-wilson/)
WordPress All-in-One For Dummies (http://optimwise.com/book-review-wordpress-for-dummies-by-lisa-sabin-wilson/)
WordPress Web Design for Dummies (http://optimwise.com/review-wordpress-web-design-for-dummies-by-lisa-sabin-wilson/)
WordPress Bible (http://optimwise.com/review-wordpress-bible-by-aaron-brazell/)
If you’re looking for any books related to web design, I have an even longer list of those: http://www.goodreads.com/review/list/1586355-chad-warner?format=html&order=d&shelf=web-design&utf8=%E2%9C%93&view=table
P.S., I really wish Livefyre allowed HTML so I could make these links pretty.
@Chad Warner Thanks for the books Chad!
Feb 27, 2013I agree that we need to have to ability to add HTML with Livefyre. I can add in the admin panel, but not here. Let me check into that.
Hey Dustin Check out this post for a $40 standup desk – a little construction required but looks pretty cool (I love to stand and work myself)
Feb 28, 2013http://opensoul.org/blog/archives/2012/01/09/the-40-standup-desk/
@rob_jwilliams Nice! I’m looking for something more freestanding to replace my old desk, but this is a worthy option as well. Thanks!
Feb 28, 2013@DustinHartzler I listened. I’m not waiting for anything. 🙂
Feb 28, 2013Funny, I missed listening to your show yesterday, but I had gone to Code.org and seen the video. I so wish I had stuck with programming when I was in high school back in the 80’s. Now I use Crystal Reports and find the more I know about SQL the better I am at building reports. I used to not think I liked programming, but I love database work. Realizing that most programs have databases behind them was the turning point for me.
Feb 28, 2013Very motivational one! I do web design as a hobby and feel quite imtimidated to go beyond HTML and CSS. I’ve found it difficult to get started with PHP. Feel like the road has suddenly become way steeper…
Feb 28, 2013@JoeyF Hey Joey, it’s not that hard 🙂 You can start slowly and gradually learn as you need. That’s what I’ve done!
Mar 1, 2013The incoming links that Joe is experiencing are classic trackback spam.
Mar 1, 2013The people running those sites use a program to submit trackbacks to Joe’s site in the hopes of getting a link to their site (in the comments and trackback section).
They don’t want to link to his site, as reciprocal links are less effective SEO-wise, so when he gets to the site, he can’t find the link that the trackback says there should be. It never existed, except in the spammer’s program…
I’ve used a plugin called Simple Trackback Validation for 4 years or so and it’s been really effective at stopping this dead.
@StephenCronin thanks for the clarification Stephen!
Mar 1, 2013Hey Dustin, Yes! I have a stand up desk. They’re very popular here in Sweden because IKEA do a great range of them available over here. I got one to help with my back last December and it’s made a huge difference to my bac kand posture. I also feel more energetic. I didn’t build up my strength or anything. Just started standing all day from the first day I got it. Sure, I eat lunch sitting down but whenever I’m in the office I’m standing. One tip is to get a gel mat to stand on. It helps.
Mar 3, 2013I love this video. Never seen it before. It has inspired me to find some sort of coding camp for my daughter as she has shown a big interest in computers and her elementary school of course does not go beyond the basics. Being in Seattle there is a plethora of talented coders around that a kids class shouldn’t be too hard to find. Just wish I learned to code earlier – although I was the first in my HS class to have a computer when I was younger. Saved up about $1200 to buy an Apple IIe and I thought it was the coolest thing ever!! Why it took me so long to find my path I will never know. But never too old to learn, right? I better shut up before I age myself further 😉
