Keywords

Each page should be optimized for 1 to 3 different keyword rankings. The more content the more targeted keywords can be applied.

Title Tags

The title tag is one of the most important SEO for Google techniques. Similar to a H1 tag (see below) it communicates a signal to both the search engines and visitors the expected intent and content of the page.

Meta Descriptions

Meta descriptions are not visible on your page but rather part of the pages coding. Search engine find them when they crawl your website. They are used to digest the words on the page and are often used as the snippet found right below the page title on a search results page.

Header Tags

Heading tags (H1, H2, H3, H4 etc.) help emphasis the pages purpose. Similar to a newspaper article use the H1 heading tag to grab the reader’s attention with a catchy phrase that refers to the content.

Content

Content is king in the SEO for Google world. Always write for both your visitors and the search engines.

Image Optimization

When Google and others crawl your web pages they cannot see images, photos, videos and other digital media. SEO for Google includes providing a method for search engines to understand what the image is about. These are called alt tags.

@warnerchad I’m always looking to improve as well, but never have the time to research myself, so that’s why I find experts and glean information from them 🙂

Dustin –  Even though I pay attention to SEO, anything to reinforce what I’m doing or learning some new tips is helpful.   This was a good overview of the major points.    I enjoyed it.

I have a follow up question regarding the meta description; should the meta description be the same for all pages of be update for each page?

@stephencross With my limited knowledge, I believe that Google likes different meta data because then it will continue to scan the site.  If the meta is the same, it thinks the page is the same as another page on your site.
