Update on SOPA

Wikipedia – On January 18, 2012, the English Wikipedia, Reddit, and an estimated 7,000 other smaller websites coordinated a service blackout, or posted links and images in protest against SOPA and the Senate bill, the PROTECT IP Act (PIPA), in an effort to raise awareness. In excess of 160 million people saw Wikipedia’s banner. A number of other protest actions were organized, including petition drives, with Google saying it collected over 7 million signatures, boycotts of companies that support the legislation, and a rally held in New York City.

In response to the protest actions, the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) stated, “It’s a dangerous and troubling development when the platforms that serve as gateways to information intentionally skew the facts to incite their users and arm them with misinformation,” and “it’s very difficult to counter the misinformation when the disseminators also own the platform.”

Opponents of the bill have proposed the Online Protection and Enforcement of Digital Trade Act (OPEN) as an alternative.[2][3] On January 20, 2012, House Judiciary Committee Chairman Smith postponed plans to draft the bill: “The committee remains committed to finding a solution to the problem of online piracy that protects American intellectual property and innovation … The House Judiciary Committee will postpone consideration of the legislation until there is wider agreement on a solution.”

I forgot about builtwith.com – great tool. My favorite method for finding out if a site is WordPress is through the source code. There will be “wp” listed all over the place. I like this method because I am usually trying to figure out what theme that is used or if it is custom.

I’m loving your new Tips Website at http://www.yourwebsitetips.com. Thanks for all your hard work providing valuable info on both sites. It surely is appreciated.

By the way, I finally got my website up. Yay! No more hiding my head.

        Hi Ann!

Thanks for sharing, looking at the source code is another easy way to check and see if a website is running WordPress or not.

Congrats on getting your website up and running! As you will quickly find out, it will never be perfect, but publishing a mediocre site is better than not publishing a site at all.

Loved this episode Dustin. Like Ann I also check the source code, but what if it isn’t wordpress? I’ve been working with my employer to get their Facebook Fanpage started and they knew very little about the framework of their site. I checked the source code and saw PHP, but the site wasn’t WP. Then I was in the dark. Using builtwith.com I was able to learn a good bit about their site. Thanks for sharing this great tool with us.

BTW, congratulations on your rise to the top of iTunes for WordPress podcasts. Heavy is the head that wears to crown though. 🙂 Keep up the great work.

@Seth Dochter Every new site I go to that I like the design, I ALWAYS check to see if it’s a WordPress site and I did it the old fashioned way of trying to login to site.com/wp-admin, lol. These tools make our lives so much easier 🙂

Thanks for the congratulations on the show rank. I’m totally and “over-night” success now, haha! Now my new goal is to stay No. 1 and move up on the first page of 120 top technology, software related podcast. I’m sitting at 90 now. Gotta have goals, or I’ll never get anywhere!
